Background
Glen Dimplex is an international company specialising in the manufacture of consumer electrical goods. Over 1 year ago they launched their transformation program “Project Causeway”.
The aim of the Causeway was to implement a global business template in S4 HANA, overhauling business processes including;
- Order to Cash
- Procure to Pay
- Plan to Manufacture
- Finance
- Distribution
- Supply Chain Management
Laridae were asked to bring a team into the programme. Glen Dimplex needed us to provide both a migration solution (ETL) and to help the business prepare the data.
The result was an S4 HANA data migration success at Glen Dimplex!
Challenges
2 ERP systems were in scope to source master data. A significant number of records were duplicated between both systems and a process to consolidate Materials, Customers, and Vendors needed to be developed.
The scope of the project required a high number of objects to be loaded for which there was no existing legacy data. Laridae provided templates for the business to complete for each of these.
The integrity of datasets is very important in ERP migrations. In early phases of the project only a subset of the total records could be migrated due to incomplete enrichment.Laridae worked with the business to ensure their top selling customers were prioritised first and that the materials that were cleansed made complete “Bill of Materials (BOMS)” to enable product costing to be run.
In order to ensure financial integrity and prove trial balances, data snapshots were used from prior month ends. Since migrations were run in parallel with data cleansing exercises the Laridae team provided both migration and live environments to allow for reporting on continued business cleansing efforts whilst test migrations were taking place.
Solution
The key to the success of the migration was the Data Quality reporting. The Laridae team was able to demonstrate the impact of cleansing and enrichment activities.
This enabled the business teams to focus on the priority objects and understand the downstream impacts of upstream data quality defects. Dedicated review sessions were held with the business to determine the treatment for each Data Quality issue and the progress on the resolution was tracked.
The Data Quality reporting also ensured that, when loading to SAP, all records were successfully loaded and supported the business processes that were being designed and tested.
The tool Laridae built was specified to;
- Extract data from the legacy systems
- Enrich legacy data with additional attributes
- Cleanse and transform legacy data
- Report on the quality of the data prior to loading to SAP
- Load data to SAP using iDocs or output LTMC files
- Reconcille the loaded data
By using our existing templates the Laridae team was able to reduce the development time required significantly.
Outcomes
Within 8 months of starting the project, all 54 data objects achieved 100% conformity to data quality rules.
The migration was completed on schedule allowing the project to exit their hyper care period in half the time.
2 legacy ERP’s were consolidated into 1 SAP S4 ERP system. With standardized business processes, Glen Dimplex managed to outperform the previous year’s revenue within 1 month.
Laridae is still engaged with Glen Dimplex as we roll out further territories to S4 HANA.
